Presentation of the 1000 HPK Family Education Piloting at the 2018 VOICE International Conference
Bali, 13 December 2018
With support from UNICEF Indonesia, Marissa Chitra Sulastra and Dr. Lies Zakaria, representing the Frontiers for Health team, presented the results of the 1000 HPK Family Education Pilot and the VOICE (Viable and Operable Ideas for Child Equity) International Conference 2018.
The conference, organized by PUSKAPA UI and the CPC Network, took place at the Bali International Convention Center in Nusa Dua, Bali. Also in attendance was Prof. Anna Alisjahbana, who presented on DDTK (Early Detection of Growth and Development) on behalf of the Surya Kanti Foundation.
The subtheme, “Social Norms, Underlie Harms & Children: Learning,” presented the need for family education amidst a societal climate that still supports early marriage and “more children, more blessings.”
These two factors influence parents’ readiness to fulfill their roles and responsibilities in child care and upbringing. Unlike traditional one-way counseling, family education is conducted through a shared experience approach through dialogue and hands-on practice, providing parents with opportunities to learn from each other.
The VOICE International Conference also exposed the F2H team to various issues and solutions proposed by various parties related to children. Some of the issues raised included obtaining birth certificates for marginalized children, child labor in the cigarette industry, baby abandonment, parental behavior in sharing information about children online, the implementation of positive discipline, underage marriage, and the protection of children with disabilities. Several NGOs contacted also expressed interest in the modules and worksheets developed by F2H for the 1000 HPK Family Education program.
