1000 HPK Family Education Facilitator Training (Piloting 2 Districts, Bogor Regency)
Bogor, 3 April 2018.
Frontiers for Health, with support from UNICEF and the Directorate of Family Education Development (Bindikkel) of the Ministry of Education and Culture, launched a training program for facilitators in the First 1,000 Days of Life Family Education. The training took place at the Amaris Pakuan Hotel in Bogor from April 3-5, 2018, and was attended by facilitators from the Babakan Madang and Cijeruk sub-districts.
This training was conducted based on the observation that most facilitators, who have a background in health cadres, are unfamiliar with the concept of facilitation and the principles of adult education.
Unlike conventional counseling, adult education emphasizes sharing experiences, collective analysis, drawing conclusions, and applying them to everyday life. The facilitator’s role is not as a resource person, trainer, or teacher, but rather as someone who ensures the educational process runs smoothly and enjoyably.
The first day of the training began with an explanation of the 100HPK Family Education program, followed by lectures, simulations, and games that introduced participants to the principles of facilitation. After witnessing a demonstration of Topic 1 of the family education session the previous evening, the second day featured a simulation session led by a rotating team of three facilitators.
Some facilitators appeared to be stuck with the lecture method, but overall, they demonstrated their facilitation skills and techniques. The training concluded on the third day with reflection and evaluation. As a follow-up, each facilitator was asked to prepare to conduct two family education sessions in the eight pilot villages.
